The 28th September 2012 was a historical and special event for St Andrew’s Church and indeed the Diocese of Cyprus and the Gulf as the first Anglican priest to be ordained in the UAE was one of our own. Jo Henderson came to St Andrew’s church more than 6 years ago and her talents in Christian ministry were quickly recognised and affirmed. She was licensed as a Reader five years ago and since then has been ministering regularly to the Anglican community in Abu Dhabi.
Canon Andy Thompson said “Jo Henderson is a popular member of our congregation and is well known for her warmth, compassion and infectious laughter. Her calling to the ordained ministry has been consistently affirmed and recognised by an array of people and we rejoice that we are witnesses to culmination of this calling by hosting her ordination service.”
The Ordination service was led by Bishop Michael Lewis, Bishop in Cyprus and the Gulf, who during his sermon reminded Jo that ministry was “Not about her – but a continuation of the rich and diverse ministry of the global Church“.
The Church was packed with the regular congregations of St Andrew’s Church and there were many members of the wider community represented, including the British Ambassador and Salvation Army.
Jo will serve as Curate under the oversight of Canon Andy Thompson. She will continue to preach, oversee Children’s Ministry and develop deeper bonds with the wider community – especially with uniformed youth organisations and mother and toddler groups.
