To launch the publication of Andy Thompson’s new book “Christianity in the UAE. Culture and Heritage” the UK Ambassador hosted a Majlis discussion during the Embassy’s reception to mark the 40th Anniversary of the UAE. The discussion was led by The Duke of York and HH Shaikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan and guests included Syed Ali Al Hashemi, Spiritual Adviser to Shaikh Khalifa, other religious leaders and scholars and leading members of the British and Emirati community.
Christianity in the UAE. Culture and Heritage, celebrates the extraordinary relationship between Emiratis and the Christian community in the UAE, a statement from the embassy said. UK Ambassador Dominic Jermey said: “Andy Thompson’s book is a wonderful celebration of Christian Churches in the UAE. As Ambassador of the United Kingdom, a country very proud of its multi faith heritage and identity, I am delighted to support this work. The UAE’s warmth towards Christianity and many other faiths is a wonderful legacy of [His Highness] Shaikh Zayed’s advocacy of an open and tolerant society.”

There are many things about which people could say “only in the UAE” or “only in Abu Dhabi“. Well the annual service for Remembrance Day at St Andrew’s this year fell into that category as the service was postponed from the ‘normal’ day until Sunday 20th November because of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix event! read on

Our Facebook page
Now of course this is not for everyone, and we are certainly not asking you all to sign up for facebook! But, a significant number of our congregation ARE involved in social media in one way or another – photographers and photo enthusiasts have accounts with Picasa and Flickr; lots of people like YouTube and have favourites or even upload their own videos; some are even exploring the new Google+ social media idea (part of Google’s plan to rule the world) and of course there is Facebook and LinkedIn too. read on
From the Bishop’s Office
On 1 August 2011 the Bishop in Cyprus and the Gulf, the Rt Revd Michael Lewis, announced the appointment of a new lay canon and a new clerical canon of St Christopher’s Cathedral, Manama, Bahrain.
Mr John Banfield is a co-opted member of Diocesan Synod’s Standing and Finance Committee, which is also the Bishop’s Council. For some time now he has had special responsibilities in the oversight and planning of the diocese’s finances. He also supervises the coordination of its representation in the United Kingdom. Through his life in business John has had a long residential and travelling association with the region and the diocese, both Cyprus and the Gulf. He has been particularly instrumental in maintaining and developing the diocese’s major mission and service project of Christ Church and its clinics in Aden, where he is a member of the Council of Reference.
The Reverend Andrew Thompson MBE is Chaplain of St Andrew’s in Abu Dhabi and Diocesan Director of Ordinands, as well as Vocations Training and Ordination Officer for the Gulf Archdeaconry specifically. Until his appointment to Abu Dhabi he served as Chaplain of St Paul’s in Kuwait, and both before and since ordination has lived and worked in a variety of Middle Eastern locations including the United Arab Emirates.
Please pray for John and Mary and for Andy and Navina and their families.
It was later (30 August) confirmed that the installation will be held at the cathedral during the evening eucharist on Sunday 4 December 2011. Any who will be in Bahrain then are cordially invited to attend.
